REI Recalls Bicycles

Wednesday, 3 June 2009

REI is recalling the 2005 Novara Trionfo bicycle due to fork failure. The fork can separate from the steerer tube (not good). Injuries so far have included a broken collarbone, broken teeth, head injuries and facial damage and this is from only two failures. More information is available here.

Specialized Recalls Some Bicycles

Tuesday, 21 April 2009

Specialized Bicycle Components has issued two recalls on some of their bicycles. One involves handlebars that can break (ouch) while the other involves the cable stop. The CPSC refers to them as “serious fall hazard” and just “fall hazard”, respectively. “Serious” in this case means puncture wound and head injury whereas not “serious” just involves broken bones. More information on the first is available here while info on the second is here.

Cannondale Recalls Some 2009 Road Bikes

Tuesday, 17 March 2009

Cannondale is recalling some of their 2009 road bikes due to missing spoke protectors. What’s a spoke protector you ask? It’s that goofy looking plastic thing on the rear wheel to keep the chain out of the spokes. I’m pretty sure that’s what the derailleur limiter screws are for but I guess that presumes someone knows how to use them. Anyway, for more info from CPSC or from Cannondale (not that any Cannondale riders would read this site).

Mavic R-SYS Recall

Tuesday, 3 February 2009

This recall is about a month old and we missed it as it does not appear on the CPSC site. We’re posting it here just in case you missed it too. The recall info is here.

Mavic is recalling all models of the the R-SYS front wheels due to the possibility of the carbon tubular spokes breaking. Besides replacing the wheel, Mavic is also offering a set of Aksiums for use while you wait for the new wheel. And you get to keep the Aksiums…should see a lot of Aksiums on Ebay in a few months.

And the reason it doesn’t appear on the CPSC site? “For US consumers, the following action plan is subject to review and approval by the US consumer product safety commission, which is currently pending.”

Due to the expanded recall by Peanut Corporation of America, Clif Bar has added more of their products to their recall list. For more information, check the FDA site or the Clif Bar site.

More Peanut Problems

Friday, 30 January 2009

Yes, what started as just a peanut butter problem has expanded to peanuts and other peanut products. The recalls of peanut products has expanded to quite a long list, including dog treats. I’m not implying any cyclists eat dog treats but…

Peanut Corporation of America has now expanded their recall to all products from the Blakely, Georgia plant produced from January 2007 to present – yikes! It’s possible they distributed contaminated products to over 100 firms. Anyway, if you’re at all concerned check the ever-expanding list of recalls at FDA. If in doubt, toss it out.
